Let´s start this review by saying that alcohol free beer in Estonian is alkoholiton or alkoholivaba olut.
Introduction
Virmalised means northern lights. As you guessed, this non alcohol craft beer is from Estonia. The Virmalised 0 is a non-alcoholic version of their flagship IPA Virmalised.
Põhjala Brewery is a brewery I´ve had many beers from throughout the years and they are one of the top breweries in Estonia. They were founded already in 2011 and their brewery is located in the capital city of Tallinn. Other popular non-alcoholic beers from them are Prenzlauer 0 which is a non-alcoholic Raspberry Berliner Weisse and Tundra which is a Non-Alcoholic IPA.
I drank this beer just after the Easy Rider Bulldog from Gotlands Bryggeri. I thought it would be a great idea to compare the two non alcoholic IPAs.
Tasting Notes
With an IBU of 50 I had expected a very hoppy aroma, but I was disappointed. It also wasn´t bitter at all.
Virmalised 0 has a way lighter color than the Easy Rider Bulldog. It´s almost grey or silver compared to the golden hue of the Easy Rider Bulldog. The head also disappears a bit faster.

Then I took my first sip and it still did not taste like much. There is not much taste to it and it´s actually quite watery. It´s not completely an alcohol free craft beer as there is 0.5 percent alcohol in it. Still, I couldn´t taste much beer or alcohol.
There are some malty flavors and medium carbonation but that´s about it. I had excepted much more taste in this beer. Despite the IBU of 50, it was not bitter at all which was another surprise. A light body but that is to be expected from a non-alcoholic beer.
Virmalised IPA Calories and Nutrition
The Virmalised 0 has 21 kcal per 100 ml. It´s slightly above the Easy Rider Bulldog but that is probably because it´s also 0.1% higher in alcohol. Apart from yeast, hops, and water it also has some oats and lactose. I can´t say I tasted the lactose sweetness either. Sugars are 1.2 grams per 100 ml which is probably because of the lactose.
The ABV is 0.5% and the IBU is 50.
Virmalised IPA Rating
The Virmalised 0 was actually a bit of a disappointment. Põhjala Brewery makes good alcoholic beers so I had expected them to be better at the non alcoholic craft beer game.
If I would order this in a nonalcoholic bar I would drink it but I would probably not be very happy.
