I usually complain about watery non-alcoholic craft beers but this is definitely not one of them.
Introduction
I was reading the popular Finnish beer blog Olutkellari when I stumbled upon this non-alcoholic IPA. I decided to review both beers the Bier Baron reviewed, which is this Alkoholiton IPA and the Alkoholiton Pils from the same brewery. The Pils was actually pretty decent so I had some expectations of this one as well.
This non-alcoholic craft beer is brewed by Laitilan Wirvoitusjuomatehdas, a brewery from Finland. Wirvoitusjuomatehdas means something along the lines of “refreshing drinks factory”. Laitila Brewery was founded in 1995.
Tasting Notes
It pours as well as the pilsner. I managed my pour a bit better this time. It has got quite a dark color.
The darkness also really shines through in the flavor. Plenty of roasted malts gives the beer a full mouth-feel. The aroma of this Finnish non-alcoholic beer has some sweetness to it and is quite pleasant. Almost gives the vibe of some smoked specialty beer.
It is a really heavy beer. I usually complain about watery non-alcoholic craft beers but this is definitely not one of them. It´s really pleasant to keep it in your mouth for a bit. Quite bitter and the flavor lingers for a long time. A bit on the low side when it comes to carbonation but it suits the style.
Laitilan Kukko Alkoholiton IPA Calories and Nutrition
There is 15 kcal per 100 ml in this beer. In a can there is 49.5 kcal. Like the Pils, this craft beer is also gluten-free. No added sugars or any weird ingredients on the can. Nice!
ABV is 0.3% and IBU 45.
The low alcohol content is achieved by a technique called arrested fermentation.
Kukko Alkoholiton IPA Rating
I think this non-alcoholic craft IPA keeps a similar level to the Pils. I don´t really have anything bad to say it and it is quite a pleasant beer to drink. Really tastes like normal-strength craft beer at times. We also appreciate that there are no weird additives on the ingredient list and that they have made an effort for the drinkers that want gluten-free craft beer. Good job Mr. Rooster!
