Introduction

This time I’m reviewing an Oat Ale from the Finnish brewery Malmgårdin Panimo. It is one of the oldest craft breweries in Finland, founded in 2009. The brewery is located in the Malmgård Estate (Malmgårding kartano) about an hour outside of Helsinki.

This brewery, also called Malmgård Brewery, brewed one of the first Finnish craft beers I really enjoyed. It was the Malmgård X-Porter which is a really heavy porter at 7% ABV.

While this non-alcoholic craft beer is brewed at their brewery in Loviisa, Finland, it is canned at Saimaa Brewing Co. in Mikkeli.

Tasting Notes

The head you see in the pictures was how it looked like just seconds after I poured the beer. Not much head retention that’s for sure. It also looks a bit sad and has a kind of hazy greyish look to it.

However, the aroma of this Finnish non-alcoholic beer is brilliant. Unlike the Virmalised 0 from Põhjala Brewery we previously reviewed, this beer really has a strong aroma. Especially when just poured it smells like a dry-hopped IPA. The aroma is full of tropical fruit.

I had expected the body to be on the heavier side because of the oats. Then again, it’s still a non-alcoholic beer, so I guess there is only so much you can do. I would still say it has a decent medium body but maybe on the lighter side.

Flavour is alright but could be a bit more powerful. I think it could even benefit from being a bit sweeter. The carbonation could also be a bit higher and maybe it would be a good idea to raise the bitterness. While I really enjoyed the first few sips it gets a bit lackluster when I’m finishing off the can. It’s not really complex enough to be really exciting.

Malmgårdin Panimo Oat Ale Rating

The Malmgårdin Oat Ale took me on a bit of a rollercoaster ride. The pouring experience was poor while the initial aroma of the beer was amazing.

However, the beer lacks complexity. I know it’s is supposed to be a sessionable Pale Ale but I still think they could have made it a bit more exciting. It’s still a drinkable beer though, and I wouldn’t be upset if I got it at an alcohol free craft beer bar.
