The first sip of the Bonfire Stout was intense

Introduction

A day before I drank the Drop Bear Bonfire Stout, I had gotten my hands on the Tropical IPA from the same brewery. It was part of a larger batch of beers and I saved the IPA until last because I had the highest expectations of it.

However, when it came to the grand finale I realized my brother had drunk the Tropical IPA. He blamed it on someone else but I’m pretty sure it was him. Bugger.

Luckily, the next day I visited Pien in Helsinki and found the Drop Bear Beer Bonfire Stout. It was about 5€ and I decided to try it. I still had very high expectations on this beer although I would have wanted to try the IPA first.

Drop Bear Beer Co. is a Welsh craft brewery focusing only on non-alcoholic craft beer. The brewery was founded in 2019. Let’s continue our Bonfire Stout review!

Tasting Notes

The beer is called the Bonfire Stout. I haven’t had that many non-alcoholic stouts but an example of one I had recently was the Collab beer Very Small Moose brewed by Mash Gang and Fierce Beer.

The first sip of the Bonfire Stout was intense! You know how when you eat 99% dark chocolate that contains absolutely no added sugar? It’s that kind of bitterness that hits you. It was a bit overwhelming at first but I was better prepared for the following sips. It’s is really very heavy on the dark chocolate.

I also totally get where the name bonfire comes from. It tastes a bit like digging into a bonfire, very much in the same way as when drinking a Laphroaig 10.

It’s good though and a very nice complex balance between the roasted malts and chocolate. The roastery calls it “smokey, roasted, and smooth” and I would agree.

Bonfire Stout Calories and Nutrition

This low calorie non-alcoholic beer has 17 kcal per 100 ml which means 55 kcal in a can.

It’s both vegan and gluten-free. Not all breweries are making both vegan and gluten free non-alcoholic beers so we are happy about that.

There is only one hop used and that is Chinook. It has plenty of other ingredients like wheat, flaked oats, chocolate malts, roasted barley, and smoked malt.

The abv is 0.5% and the IBU 32.

Bonfire Stout Rating

My first Drop Bear beer did not disappoint. This is a solid non-alcoholic craft beer I would happily drink again. Now I just hope I will get my hands on the Tropical IPA soon.
