West Coast Hop Lock was the fourth beer I‘ve had from Lowtide Brewing Co. I think it was also the first non alcoholic West Coast Pale Ale I‘ve had. I bought it from Pien, the bottle shop in Helsinki that I have previously written about. This beer was a very interesting one so continue reading for the whole beer review! Also, don‘t forget to read my review of their beer Promises I Made Myself.

Tasting notes
The head on this beer won‘t win any awards as it disappeared quite quickly. The beer pours quite hazy which was my experience also with their Ohana.
The beer has an aroma of tropical fruits and I think orange and passion fruit are the most prominent ones. I was thrown back by the hoppiness when I took my first sip. It is quite bitter and the bitterness lingers for minutes after your last sip. At first I thought it was not a really well-balanced beer, but after I got over the initial shock the beer grew on me quickly. It feels like back in the day when brewers made their beers a bit too hoppy. The taste is quite smoky but checking the ingredients there is not really anything that explains where it comes from. It is brewed with Windsor yeast and contains Vienna malt and wheat. There shouldn‘t be any smokiness in there.
Nutrition
There is 10 kcal per 100 ml of West Coast Hop Lock. We had it in a pint-sized can, which means there is about 50 kcal in a serving. Not bad at all and I would definitely consider it a low calorie beer. It is not a gluten free beer but it is suitable for vegans.
Our West Coast Hop Lock Verdict
I was first a little shocked when I head this beer. I really thought it wasn‘t well-balanced, but I was wrong. It‘s only the first sip that is a bit intense and after that it just gets interesting. It‘s a lovely beer with plenty of tropical fruit flavours hiding beneath the bitterness. Unfortunately, I couldn‘t find the IBU of this beer and that would be something I‘d like to find out. Don‘t hesitate to contact me through our social media profiles if you find that information. Meanwhile, try to get your hands on this beer if you like west coast beers, it‘s a worthy non-alcoholic version of this awesome beer style!
